Creating an Organizational Line of Sight to Increase Employee Performance

The Challenge
A federal security agency selected Wedgewood to lead the development of their first-ever Strategic Plan. The Agency had been re-organized several times over the last few years and each re-organization created a new division/directorate, re-aligned an old directorate, or separated a directorate from the agency entirely. With each change, employees felt less aligned with the organization; the line of sight from organizational goals to employee's daily performance was lost. There was a lack of understanding from each directorate of how they contributed to agency objectives and how each directorate related to and affected each other. The client needed a plan that provided a line of sight from agency goals to each directorate’s goals and work performance.
The Solution
Wedgewood met one-on-one with division staff and conducted a two-day senior leader strategic planning session to develop organizational mission and vision statements, core competencies, and strategic goals. Using the information gathered during the work session and one-on-one meetings we drafted a strategic plan. Upon approval of the Strategic Plan, Wedgewood worked with each directorate to develop implementation plans and performance metrics to aid in employee evaluations.
The Result
Wedgewood's efforts resulted in an FY 2007-2008 Strategic Plan with comprehensive directorate level implementation plans and performance metrics that align with the organizational goals. This document provides a line of sight that gives employees a better sense of identity within the organization. Employees are able to recognize the collaboration among the directorates and understand how their individual roles and performance affects the agency mission and goals.
